01 Why it matters

What you don’t see

An air exchanger renews the air in your home around the clock. It pulls stale, humid air out of the rooms and sends it outside, while bringing in fresh outdoor air. The two streams cross in the core without mixing: the outgoing air gives part of its heat to the incoming air, so the house doesn't cool down in winter.

That core, the filters and the fans see all the air from inside and outside: dust, pollen, fibres, humidity. Over time the core passages clog, the filters fill up and the airflow drops. The unit keeps running, but it renews less and less air.

The first signs are often indirect: condensation on windows in winter, lingering smells, heavy air. A neglected exchanger can also get noisy, and its drain can clog, leaving water standing in the cabinet.

02 Signs

Time for a cleaning?

  • 01Weaker airflow at the vents
  • 02Heavy condensation on windows in winter
  • 03Smells that linger in the house
  • 04Unusual noise from the unit
  • 05Water in the cabinet or a drain that doesn't flow

03 Our method

Four steps, every time.

Dust-sensor inspection

A powerful dust sensor measures how contaminated the ducts are and finds the problem areas.

Every duct cleaned

We run high-pressure compressed-air whip nozzles through each connected duct to loosen the build-up.

Unit cleaned

Core, filters, fans and internal components cleaned. The drain is checked.

Disinfection

The ducts are disinfected against bacteria and fungi.

05 Questions

Air exchangers: your questions

01How often should an air exchanger be cleaned?

A professional cleaning once a year. Check and clean the filters yourself every 2 to 3 months.

02How much does air exchanger cleaning cost?

From $250 before tax, dryer vent free. With one ductless mini-split, the package is $450.

03What's the difference between an HRV and an ERV?

An HRV (heat recovery ventilator) recovers heat from the outgoing air. An ERV (energy recovery ventilator) also recovers some of its humidity, which helps when the air is dry in winter. Both are cleaned the same way.

04Why are my windows dripping in winter?

A lot of winter condensation often means the humid air in the house isn't renewed enough. Clogged filters or a dirty core move less air. Cleaning helps the exchanger recover its airflow; also check that its settings suit the season.
